NotesGEORGE McKENZIE VERNON
1864 - 1945

Reformatory Boy

British Home Child

George McKenzie Vernon was born 11 April 1864 in Wednesbury Staffordshire, England. He was the oldest son of Thomas Vernon (1830 - 1884) and Isabella McKenzie (1840 - aft 1907?). He had two brothers, John (1867) and William Richard (1869) both born at Wednesbury and two sisters, Sarah (1872) and Elizabeth (1878) both born at Derby Derbyshire, England.

The Philanthropic Society was founded in London in 1788. The Society occupied the Farm School at Redhill in 1849. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the school was classed as a reformatory.

George Vernon was admitted at Redhill Farm School on 9 April 1877 having been convicted in Derby Police Court on 10 March 1877 with stealing 4 pieces of paper from a shop (letter & P.O. value 10p). He was sentenced to 1 month of imprisonment (Derby Gaol) and 5 years detention (Redhill Farm School).

Following George's admission to Redhill, he was visited by his mother on 29 June 1878, by his mother and his brother John on 2 June 1879 and by his parents and brother on 26 June 1880. On 7 December 1880 he was visited by his parents and I assume that either the parents were advised that George would be sent to Canada, or they approved his being sent to Canada.

On 14 March 1882, George was emigrated to Canada by the Redhill Farm School. The last entry on his Redhill record is dated 1886 August saying that he is employed in the Grand Trunk Railway, Montreal.

(Review Redhill record for Silver and to confirm details.)

There is a possibility that George returned to England sometime between 1886 and 1890. On the 1901 Census for Canada George recorded 1890 as the date of his immigration to Canada.

George married a widow Clara Jones 20 September 1897 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Clara was born 11 May 1870, daughter of Frederick A. Jones and Georgiana. Clara had a son Frederick James Phelan born 31 July 1894 from an earlier marriage.

George and Clara had two daughters, Lillian Clara Vernon born 28 July 1899 and Georgina Corona Vernon born 8 Sep 1902. Georgina died 29 July 1903.

Clara died at an unknown date in Montreal, Quebec.

George married another widow Mary Ellen Bilmer 28 July 1903 in Montreal, Quebec. Mary Ellen had two sons, Albert James Warren born 10 August 1895, and Leslie Talbot Warren born 15 October 1898 from an earlier marriage. George and Mary Ellen had seven children.
