In 1913, James Welfare, 15, arrived at Quebec, Canada, along with a group of 87 Macpherson children accompanied by Mr. Merry en route to Stratford or Hespeler, Ontario, Canada.
On March 28, 1916, James Welfare, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided in Elmwood, Bruce, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Horley, Surrey, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Mrs. Annie Adams, Charlesfield Road #4, Horley, Surrey, England; that his date of birth was February 2, 1898, that he was not married; and that he was a farmer. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; medium complexion; gray eyes; dark hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had one vaccination mark on his left arm.
