In 1891 Elijah is found living in Everton, Lancashire, England at a home for boys and girls. He is under the care of a Mrs. Fanny Englein, 70 years old. In 1897 Elijah is brought to Canada under care of the Dr. Barnardo Homes. At the time of his death he was working for a Mr. W. D. Perkins in Lothair, Montana, USA.

Obituary, page 14 Elijah Whittle, death by drowning, Sunday July 2, on the farm of Mr. W. D. Perkins. Lothair P.O. Man Elijah was bathing with the owners son , plunged into the deep water, never to be seen again. Corner ruled it was entirely accidental. Was buried in rural churchyard.
