1911 English Census for James Wiles lists him among the 'inmate' children of Saint Joseph and Saint Anne's Orphanage near Orpington, Farnborough, Kent. James was born in 1898 in Bermondsey, London, England.

Library and Archives Canada notes James Williams arrival in 1913 abroad the Corsican from Liverpool, England to Quebec, Canada going to Mrs. Brit's Knowlton Sheltering Home. In leaving the United Kingdom, James' surname was recorded as 'Willo' and in arriving in Canada it's recorded as 'Williams'.

Attestation papers were signed on 17 Jan 1916 in Montreal, Quebec Canada. James Wiles present address was 97 Anderson Street in Montreal. He was born 25 Jul 1896 in London, England.
