Stanley's mother died from tuberculosis two months after his birth, leaving four children under five.

The family sent the two eldest boys to a monastic home to be brought up and the other two girls to a convent. From that day, the girls never saw their brothers or father again.

In 1938, S. C. Witts, 10, arrived at Fremantle, Australia, in a group of Catholic boys from Nazareth House, Stoke Bishop.

Stanley lived in Clontarf from 1938-1942; then Tardun (from 1942-1945); then back again to Clontarf (from 1945-1946); then to Bindoon (from 1946-1947). He joined the Railways in Katanning and lived in the Railway Barracks until his death in 1968, aged 40.

His niece, Marie Murnane, asks anyone who may have known Stanley to contact her so that she might be able to give at least some more information to her mother. Write her at **
