Notes Mary immigrated to Canada on 23 May 1896 via the Marchmont Home, an institute that helped place "British Home Children" into colonial familes, either as foster children or domestic help.
Mary initially wnet to work in the home of Mr and Mrs J Kerwood Kerr at Heathcote, in Grey County, Ontario. She remained there until October 1900 when she returned to the Marchmont Home and was subsequently sent to Mr and Mrs J W Crews in Trenton. In November 1901, Mary cambe back to the Marchmont Home, said to be "in trouble" with a John Westlake, a neighbor of the Crews. Mary and John Westlake married at once and settled near the Crews to raise a family. John worked for the Crews family his entire life.
Mary and John had 4 children: Ida May, Albert Edward, Kenneth W, and John Edward.
After the death of her husband in 1955, Mary went to live with her daughter Ida and her husband Ogle Down. She lived with them for many years before moving to Rosebank Convalescent Home, Rosebank, Ontario where she died in 1968
By the year 2012 there were nearly 200 descendants of Mary and John Westlake.
