NotesA birth registration was found for Mary Ann Amey: Year of Registration: 1871; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Sudbury; County: Essex, Suffolk; Volume: 4a; Page: 466. Mother: Caroline Amey, unmarried.

Her mother was Caroline Amey and her father was Ransome Oxley, who was a chemist in Sudbury, Suffolk and was already a married man.

Caroline and Mary Ann remained in the workhouse for approximately 16 months.

They went to Bethnal Green, London where Caroline went into service in 1875 and a year prior to her daughter's admission to the Annie MacPherson Home. She met and married Richard Muckley on 7 February 1881, who was a French Polisher by trade.

The couple had a child and Richard said that he was averse to supporting Mary Ann as he had little trade at the time.

Mary Ann was then placed in MacPherson Home. She was aged 11 years, although on records was stated as being 12, so able to work as an adult as 11 was still classed as a child. Her record number was 1326.

In 1882, Mary A. Amey, 12, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 63 MacPherson girls.

The homes that Mary Ann worked in are as follows:

Mr John McBride, Mount Forest P.O.
Mr & Mrs Marshall, Stratford
Mr TB McCarthy, Stratford
Mr Isaac Ballter, Platsville, P.O.
Mrs Madill, Stratford, Avon Street
Mrs R Peters, Brunner, P.O.
Mr & Mrs Quigley, Dobbington, P.O.
Mrs McBride, Mount Forest P.O.
Mrs James Halloelm, Hichison P.O.
Mr George Biggins, [Woodstoe] P.O.

She finally returned to England on 28 October 1892, where she worked her passage home.

She then met up with her mother, Caroline, and cared for her until she died.

On October 27, 1895, at St James the Great, Bethnal Green, London, England, a marriage was registered between Mary Ann Amey, 26, daughter of the late William John Amey; and William Benjamin Portway, widower, 42, labourer, son of the late John Portway.

William and Mary Ann Amey Portway had at least 3 children: George Charles Portway, born June 27, 1897. George joined the Army, entering the 2nd Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment and during World War I, was sent to Mesopotamia where he was killed in action on April 6, 1916 (service number 11871); Thomas William Portway, born 1899 in Bethnal Green, London, England; and Charles Benjamin Portway, born 1904 in Bethnal Green, London, England.

William Benjamin Portway died in 1908 at Bethnal Green, London, England.
