Registration Year: 1870
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration number: 22976

Parents: Godfrey Louis (or Lewis) Cope and Maria Kenney, married December 26, 1866, in Mile End, London, England.

Godfrey Louis Cope's estate was probated on January 8, 1875, in Northamptonshire, England.

"4 September. Administration of the effects of Godfrey Louis Cope late of the Barnwell Station of the London and North Western Railway at or near Barnwell in the County of Northampton Station Master who died 8 January 1875 at the Barnwell Station was granted at the Principal Registry under the usual Limitations to Frederick Charles Cope of 3 Lansdowne-terrace Rosherville in the County of Kent Espire the Grandfather and Guardian of Helen Maud Cope Spinster a Minor and of Wilfred Ernest Cope and Frederick Godfrey Cope Infants and Children and only Next of Kin."

In 1875, the father of Wilfred, Godfrey Louis Cope, upon his death was entitled to certain annuities and mortgages. As he died intestate (without a Will), his widow renounced her right to the estate and granted the administration to her father-in-law, Frederick Charles Cope, Wilfred's grandfather. He was duly elected to administer the annuities for the use of the three minor children until they reached the age of 21.

Their grandfather sold all of the property due to the children and used it for his private purposes. The children, in 1880, were provided legal counsel and sued their grandfather for that money; however the case was found for their grandfather and the children were pauperized. (The Law Reports: Chancery Division, and on appeal therefrom in Volume 16 [In re COPE; COPE vs COPE (1880 C. 0430)])

In 1883, Wilfred Cope, 13, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 35 Roman Catholic children, accompanied by Rev. Thomas Seddon, of London, England, and en route to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

"Sixteenth Annual Report of the Local Government Board, 1886-87; Copy of Reports of Inspection of Children sent out to Canada, as of February 12, 1887.

Report of Mr. W. J. Wills, Government Immigration Agent at Ottawa, Ontario.

Wilfred Cope, from hamlet of Mile End Old Town, placed with Martin Quinn, Bowesville P.O., Co. Carleton, Ontario. Is a good boy, is in receipt at present 50 cents a day and board during the season of saving the root crops."

On October 30, 1889, it was recorded in the National Probate Calendar that:

"Administration of the Personal Estate of Godfrey Louis Cope late of Barnwell Station of the London and North Western Railway at or near Barnwell in the County of Northampton Station Master who died 8 January 1875 at Barnwell Station was granted at the Principal Registry to Helen Maud Mayhew (Wife of John William Mayhew) of 26 Portman-place Globe-road Mile-End-road in the County of Middlesex the daughter and one of the Next of kin. The Administration granted at the Principal Registry September 1876 having ceased and expired."
