NotesNoel J. Brinsmead was a younger son of Horace George and Alice Brinsmead. A business man in Australia and in England with his father and brothers, he emigrated to England in 1898, but found it impossible to work with the new people introduced into the concern and resigned, starting business for himself. Horace Brinsmead died through suicide on July 22, 1908 at age 52. He shot himself in the heart with a revolver at his warehouse in John Street, adjoining Tottenham Court Road. He left a letter for his wife saying he was expecting trouble in the near future. He had some months before suffered from influenza. He had been in business on his own account after leaving John Brinsmead and Sons Ltd.

In 1912, Noel Brinsmead, 16, arrived at Portland, Maine, USA, traveling alone with the support of the East End Emigration society en route to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Soon after he arrived, he signed up for World War I active duty with the Canadian Army and went back to fight in the British Armed Forces, Buffs 3rd, East Kent Regt. He was seriously injured at Ypres in May of 1915 and discharged due to a heart ailment on October 5, 1916.

Interestingly, Noel Brinsmead, 21, (Service No. 1951799) is shown as once again enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on February 6, 1917. He declared that he resided in the Grand Central Hotel, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; that he was born in Sydney, Australia; that his next of kin was his mother, Mrs. Harris George Brinsmead, who resided at 16 Norton Road, Wembley, Middlesex, England; that he was a seaman; that he had previous served in the Buff Regt. for 2 years. He was described as 5 foot 8 inches in height; dark complexion; hazel eyes; brown hair. The only marks they found before determining him fit for duty was an appendix scar on his left side. (Regimental Number RG 150. Reference Number is Accesion No. 1992-93/166, Box 1073-8.)
