NotesWilliam Burton, age 17, sailed to Canada on the SS Virginian, arriving in March 1913.

On November 11, 1915, at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, William Alfred Burton, 20, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he had no stated address; that he was born in Nottingham, England; that his next of kin was his father, Henry Burton, who resided at 29 Meredith Street, Nottingham, England; that his date of birth was September 2, 1895; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 6-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; brown eyes; light hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

William Alfred Burton died on September 28, 1916, at the battle of Vimy Ridge. He was buried at the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

His name was inscribed on a memorial in Nottinghamshire which was erected by Oliver Hind, this memorial was destroyed in the 1990's and had contained the names of at least five men named on the memorial are known to have gone out to Canada and subsequently to have served in the Canadian infantry.
