NotesA birth registration was found for Charles Frederick Crowley: Year of Registration: 1899; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Brighton; County: Sussex, East Sussex; Volume: 2b; Page: 193. (Parents may have been James CROWLEY and Rosetta HUTTON. The children were William, James, Danny, Jack, Ann, Gladys, Rose and Grace(?).)

The parents were originally from Cork, Ireland, and died fairly young. The boys went to an orphanage and the girls were raised in a convent. The name of St. Joseph's Orpington was noted as well as St. Mary's Registry.

In 1915, Charles Crowley, 15 (along with his brother, William Crowley, 10), arrived in Quebec, Canada with a group of 21 young people en route to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The last time William and Charles heard from their family abroad was a letter received from Ann dated April 28, 1924. Her address and married name were Mrs. Ann Hollingdale, 18 Conway Street, Hove, England. In the letter, Ann said Gladys had a son named Billy, and at that time she worked at housework. The letter also said that one of the girl's husbands had a hotel called the Red Lion. The letter further mentioned a picture, or included a picture, of the Lofthouse Crosbie & Co. It is possible that Danny was in the war because it mentioned his name being on the War Memorial in Brighton. Someone checked for me and said there was a D. Crowley on the Brighton War Memorial. The brothers in Canada did try to contact the family after 1924 but were unsuccessful.

Charles Frederick Crowley died November 25, 1982 in Kenora, Ontario, Canada.
