NotesIn 1901, Fanny Bicknell, 7, daughter, with Alfred, 40, Pearl Button Cutter, and Selina, 36, along with siblings Annie, 4, and Alfred, 11 months, in Aston, Warwickshire

Fanny was from the Birmingham Area and seems to have gone by both Fanny and Florence, but apparently preferred Fanny. She did not enter the Middlemore's Children's Emigration Homes directly -- she was from Aston Union and the reasons for being placed there will be with the Aston Union records (MG: Her mother's death in 1902 is the obvious cause).

The original records (not microfilms) can be viewed at the Birmingham Central Library, Archives and History Service. If elsewhere in the world, the records can be copied from microfilms deposited in Library and Archives Canada and sent to you. There are specific references to find the information about her history after 1905. If visiting the Birmingham Central Library, the references can be emailed without cost from the contact below. If you wish the references, please contact the address below for costs to cover postage, handling, etc., for a package of materials containing the references and how to get copies of the relevant documents from Library and Archives Canada. There are approximately seven pages in Fanny's file. Patricia Roberts-Pichette, Coordinator, BIFHSGO Middlemore Project (email: mabexsec (at) sympatico.ca).

Of the three BICKNELL children, only Fanny (the eldest) was sent overseas. Her sister Annie was found to be fostered by the THOMAS family in Bewdley, Worcestershire (MG: This was reportedly from the 1911 census, however it appears she was a domestic in Stockton, Warwickshire for a different family). Her brother Albert was sent to a farm in Tamworth, Staffordshire. He later died aboard HMS Hecla which was torpedoed in 1942.
