In 1883, Alfred Carloss, 13, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 11 children from the Barton Regis Board of Guardians, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, and en route to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.

Alfred Carloss, aged 18. From Barton Regis Union. Placed with and still with, William Helmes, Paddock, Kars, King's County, N.B.?I visited Alfred Carloss, found him still with William Helmes; had quite a talk with him. He has a bad cough, which appears to be chronic; well otherwise, and able to do his work. Mr. and Mrs. Helmes like him very much. Alfred says he likes them as well, said he is treated very kindly; they do everything for him. He is in a pretty part; could by no possibility be placed in a better position considering his cough."
