Notes(Some records state he arrived on the SS Scandinavian).

The family story passed down to me said Dan ran away from home to Canada at the age of 14 or 15 (1884/85.) Here he supposedly became a member of the Canadian Mounties, or the North West Mounted Police as it was called then. After this it was said he lived with Red Indians, whether as a captif we don't know and had his face marked in their fashion. He joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a bare back rider and lassoo artist and travelled to the UK with the show, visiting family in Bristol while the show was there in 1891.

Dan's elder sister, my great grandmother, had died tragically barely 2 months before his visit, leaving a distraught husband and 5 young children. Whether Dan knew this I don't know. He was never seen again after this visit.

I have discovered Dan's father, Daniel Brown, died when he was 3 months old, leaving his mother with 5 young children, the eldest being 10 and Dan being the youngest

Dan did not runaway as believed but seems to have been a pupil at the Clifton Industrial School for boys in Bristol, travelling with a party of boys from the school to Canada in 1885. What happened after that I have been unable to find out. He is not recorded as being a Canadian Mountie and the only information The Buffalo Bill Historical Museum has about him is that which my late mother gave them.

Dan's siblings remained in the UK. Whether they knew the truth of his departure to Canada I don't know.

Despite much searching of web sites over the last few years, both in Canada, USA and England I have been unable to find any trace of Dan at all. I have read books on Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and joined mailing lists, all to no avail. I have wondered if he changed his name. If so then I may never find him.
