In 1890, James Birch, 11 (along with sister, Harriet Birch, 8) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 71 MacPherson children taken by GT Railway accompanied by Rev. Robert Wallace and en route to Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

On May 3, 1906, at Carleton, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between James Birch, 25, section man, born in England to James and Mary Birch; and Birdie May Rivington, 21, born in Carp, Ontario, Canada, to Robert Rivington and Minerva Edey.

According to James' grandson, Jim Spencer:

"He and my grandmother eloped - since Grandma's mom didn't think a Home Boy would be a suitable life partner for her eldest daughter. My great grandmother was very wrong about that! Grandpa Birch provided my best memories of childhood and my best memories of Christmas."

James and Birdie May Rivington Birch had at least 4 children: Robert James Horace Birch, (born March 22, 1907, in Fitzroy, Carleton, Ontario, Canada. Robert died December 2, 1915, of meningitis, 2 weeks duration, and heart failure in Kinburn, Fitzroy, Carleton, Ontario, Canada); Horace Birch; Norman R. Birch; and Florence M. Birch (1914 ? 1995).

James William Birch died March 30, 1962, aged 82 years, in Kinburn, Fitzroy, Carleton, Ontario, Canada. Birdie May Rivington Birch died March 17, 1963, aged 78 years, in Almonte, Ontario, Canada.
