Notes A birth registration was found for Emily Jane Abbott: Year of Registration: 1886; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Guisborough; County: Yorkshire - North Riding; Volume: 9d; Page: 519. (Parents: David Abbott and Mary (Cattermole) Redfearn married Guisboro, York, England, in 1881.)
Emily's mother tried in vain to keep the family together after the death of her husband, David Abbott, in London on Mary 1, 1898. She finally gave the children up one by one to Barnardos. Emily Abbott was admitted to Barnardos on May 23, 1901. Mary Abbott said when her last child was sent, "Sorry you are sending all my children to Canada", but she apparently gave no objection to Barnardos.
In 1903, Emily Abbitt, 12, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 262 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, and Winnipeg and Russell, Manitoba, Canada. (Brother David Abbott, was admitted to Barnardos in September, 1899, at the age of 8-1/2 years. At age 10, he was sent to Canada in 1901 by Barnardos on the Tunisian. David was sent to Mr Henning A. Jordan in Lindsay Ontario, Canada. Sister, Mary, was sent to Canada in 1902 by Barnardos on the Colonian. They were all sent from Tottenham, London, England. Mother Mary was working around Bures just before the children were sent over.
Emily was placed with Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Read, Bobcaygeon Farm, Ontario. It seems that Emily, while at Bobcaygeon, Ontario, never knew her brother David was at Lindsay only 18 miles from her, but her sister Mary did come to visit.
On November 8, 1905, at Victoria, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was recorded between Emily Abbott, 22, born Yorkshire, England, to David Abbott and Mary Catermote; and another home child, Henry James Jolly, 27, stablehand, born in Rumsfeld, England, to Robert and Ann Jolly. Emily saved enough money between her arrival in 1903 and 1905 to bring her mother to Canada to attend her wedding.
The Winnipeg Free Press reported the death of Emily Abbott Jolly on September 1, 1966:
