Notes Born in Hammersmith, London, eldest child of Henry Cliffen and Blanche Hinton. Father Henry died 1899. In 1905 Walter was sent to Canada. There was a younger brother Charles who followed a year later. Blanche also had two daughters, one died 1897 and the other died 1907. Walter went to the Children's Home in Hamilton first of all but I have no records of where he worked. As well as being widowed and looking after a sick daughter, Blanche was also living with her blind mother. Her mother died 1910 and sometime between 1911 and 1913 Blanche went to Canada, I presume, to find her sons. She did find them. In January 1914 she married again, George Caughell, a Canadian farmer. Walter signed up for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1915 and he was injured in 1WW as a result of mustard gas. He married Emma Goossens in 1916. They had a son Walter Howard 1917 ande another son, who was stillborn in 1920. In 1921 Emma died of TB.He then married Lilian Gladman.I'm not sure when or where he died but his son Walter Howard stayed in Canada and died in 2009.
