In 1901, Nelly Annandale is shown as the adopted daughter of Herbert Jones, 49, a railway platelayer, and his wife, Harriet Jones, of Willington, Wollaston, Shropshire, England. Herbert Jones had been a policeman in Manchester. He and his wife Harriett did not have any children of their own so they chose to adopt Nellie Annandale. Herbert Jones died in June, 1910 in Atcham Union Workhouse, Shropshire. Harriet Jones died in 1914.

In 1911, Nellie Annandale, 14, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 27 girls from the Church of England Waifs & Strays en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada (2 girls to other destinations).
