NotesA birth registration was found for Louis Bassett; Year of Registration: 1891; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Salford; County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire; Volume: 8d; Page: 62.

Parents were Alfred Thomas Bassett and Mary Jane Allen. No records found on the death of his parents, but he was recorded as an orphan. Sister, Mary (Polly) Bassett, was adopted in Manchester and remained there.

In 1903, Lewis Bassett, 12, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with a group of 54 children en route to Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

In 1911, Louis Basset, 19, is shown as a Journalier (can be translated as "day laborer," labourer or "farmer") for Armand Charron and family in Laprairie and Napierville, Quebec, Canada. His date of birth is shown as May 1892 and his immigration as 1906. His country of birth is shown as France. (This may or may not be the correct individual.)

On January 29, 1916, at Perth, Ontario, Canada, Louis Bassett enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at R.M.D. 5, Pike Falls, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Manchester, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Polly Bassett, who resided in Manchester, England; that his date of birth was December 9, 1890; that he was a fireman; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; and dark hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith. He had a distingishing mark of a deformed nose.

On May 18, 1917, the Perth Courier stated that "Pte. Louis Bassett who enlisted at Perth, has been seriously wounded."

In 1936, Louis Bassett was shown in the Town of Perth, Commercial Directory as residing at 24 Harvey North.

Elmwood cemetery, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario shows Lewis Bassett, died 27 March 1970, aged 80 years, and is buried in Plot B2270.

His obituary states that he was born in Ireland, though his Attestation and birth registration seem to belie this. He belonged to the Legion in Perth. According to Louis's membership form, he had two brothers and one sister. He states his place of birth as Ireland and that his siblings are in Ireland. He was wounded in the eye and lost his eye also wounded in the elbow and heel. He received two decorations from the war, but they were not marked which ones. He is also noted as single.
