On June 2 1917, John William Stafford enlisted in Canadian Army, he gave his address as 17 Walnut St, Niagara Falls, Ont. His next of kin was given as Florence Stafford, sister, Woodstock, Ont. His birthplace was declared as Newcastle, England. His occupation was Machinist. He was 5'4" with brown hair and grey eyes, with 2 scars on his left arm. His religion was listed as Methodist.

A marriage was recorded between Rose O Pratt and John W Stafford in Eton, England in the Sept Quarter of 1918.

On 1 October 1918, John W Stafford was killed in action in France. His next of kin was named as his wife, Rose O Stafford, Love Green, Iver, Buckinghamshire. He is buried in Canada Cemetery, Tilloy-les-Cambrai. Plot: I. C. 14.

It appears that his wife never remarried and died aged 95 in Bedford in January 1992.
