"The Stanley brothers Alfred, George, Gilbert and Albert were sent to Canada in 1910, leaving behind sister Mabel (born 1893), brother Arthur (born 1905) and half-sister Gertrude (born 1908). Arthur emigrated to Australia in 1923 and Gilbert married and moved to Scotland after WWI.
In the 1901 Census, Gilbert Stanley, 5 months of age, was residing at Littlewood Pool Cottages, Yatton, Somerset, England. Other family members included: boarder James Broome, 36, ordinary agricultural labourer; Alfred Stanley, 4; George Stanley, 33, barber on farm; George Stanley, 5; Mabel Stanley, 8; and Sarah Stanley, 29.
A death registration was found for George Sampson Stanley; Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868; Year of Registration: 1907; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; Age at Death: 39; District: Long Ashton; County: Somerset; Volume: 5c; Page: 469. In 1910, Gilbert Stanley, 9 (along with his brothers, George Stanley, 15, Alfred Stanley, 13, and Albert Stanley, 7) arrived in Quebec, Canada, with a group of 132 children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1911, Gilbert Stanley, 10, is shown as a boarder with Nelson Dennis and family in Dunn, Haldimand, Ontario, Canada. His date of birth is shown as September 1901 and his immigration year as 1910. (Gilbert is residing at the same farm as his brother, Albert Stanley, 9.)
On December 15, 1915, Gilbert Stanley enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided in Dunnville, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Somersetshire, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Annie Stanley, who resided at 32 Stanley Road, Redland, Bristol, England; that his date of birth was October 28, 1898 - two years older than he actually was; that he was a labourer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5' 4" in height with a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair, curly hair. He was a member of the Evangelical faith.
