NotesA birth registration was found for Thomas Allway: Year of Registration: 1890; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: St Olave Southwark; County: London, Surrey; Volume: 1d; Page: 238. Parents: George Allway and Elizabeth Jane Coe, married 1883, Southwark, London, England.

A death registration was found for Elizabeth Allway: Year of Registration: 1892; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; Age at Death: 29; District: St Olave Southwark; County: London, Surrey; Volume: 1d; Page: 109.

[EDITORS NOTE: This BHC has a confusing set of records. It is not certain if there were TWO Thomas Allways of the same age, one born in Gloucestershire and one born in Surrey--or if there is just one who was boarded out in Gloucestershire. Therefore, we are using the theoretical argument that there is only one who became part of the Barnardo Homes after the death of his mother. Using the census as a guide, and if we have the correct Thomas Allway, it appears that all of the children were scattered after the death of Elizabeth. Willoughby went to his grandparents and for some reason Thomas was sent to a union school in Gloucestershire to be boarded out. None of the other boys were sent to Canada.]

In 1905, Thomas Allway, 15, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 433 Barnardo children en route to Toronto and Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. Some boys were sent to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Though no record yet shows when Thomas would have returned to England, it would have been before 1911 as he is shown in service with the 1st Welsh Battalion in Egypt.

Thomas Allway died of wounds received in battle on November 2, 1914, in France and/or Flanders.
