NotesElizabeth, my dearest gram, came from Orpington Orphanage in Kent. I believe the name was later changed to St George and then St.Anne's. She came through the port of Quebec and and by train to New Orpington Lodge in Hintonburg, On. (Ottawa). She was placed on a farm in Nepean, On. She was 15 years old.

She later made her way to Montreal,Qc to join her older sister Catherine who had preceded her. I have no info on her next few years until her marriage to Frank Schmidt in St Patrick's Basilica in 1907. They had four daughters and Elizabeth was carrying my mom when Frank SMITH joined the CEF and was shipped overseas. He was killed in France on June 9th,1917. In a letter he said,"if the babe's a boy, it will fill my heart with joy,if it's a girl, call her Pearl"

In 1919, my nanny married William Murphy and had four
more children, three boys and a girl but unfortunately, lost one boy to sickness. William was an extremely jealous man and Elizabeth could have no bread or milk deliveries to the house. She also needed his permission to have her sisters visit. Then it seems he got in trouble with the law and rushed the family from Montreal to Detroit,Mich where the older children were forced to steal from gardens in order to eat. By this time the oldest daughter was married and was able to get my gram and the children back to Montreal. When William returned to claim his wife and children, he was sent away never to be seen again.

As my own father was drowned five weeks before my birth, mom and I lived with my Nanny for six years until mom remarried. Elizabeth spent the rest of her life happily among her sisters and children. She died in the hospital on St.Valentine's day 1950 from heart failure. She was surrounded by the flowers and chocolates given to her earlier that day from her children.
