1911 Canadian Census records place Hector Smith as a single male born Nov 1895 in Wicklow Parish, Florenceville, New Brunswick as an adopted son to the family of Mary Pickard.

Attestation papers were signed 23 Sep 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec. Hector Gordon Albert Smith was born 6 Nov 1894 in Guildford, Surrey, England. His Next of Kin was his sister, Minnie Harding of Box 38 Gen Dely Moose Jaw. His occupation as a labourer. 5'6 1/2" in height with hazel eyes and fair hair, he had 4 vaccination scars on his left upper arm. Several scars on his right knee and shin, and a small scar on the side of the back of his neck. His religion was listed as Presbyterian.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers states he died at Number 44 Casualty Clearing Station. Hector was buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, Puchevillers, Somme,
