NotesHarry Cartwright, admitted aged 7, from Paddington Workhouse to South Berstead Certified Home on 1 Feb 1899, discharged 8 June 1899, 'To Canada'

April 11 1900

owing to his tender years he was not found a home but was kept at the Gibbs Home, Sherbrooke under the charge of Mrs Breadon, Matron, age 8, employed running messages, healthy, attended Church of England and school, character-unsatisfactory,
On 20th March inst last it was discovered that some beds in the boys sleeping room were on fire. The lad admitted causing the fire. The Superintendant laid the matter before the Committee of the Home with the result that the lad was committed to the Reformatory

October 16 1900

I visited the Reformatory for Boys, Sherbrooke on the 16th inst. Richard Cartwright is the youngest lad in the Institution. The Superintendant finds him a well behaved and bright little boy. He is too young to learn a trade, and has very little if any work to do, and appears to have considerable freedom on account of his age. He attends school regularly, and church every Sunday in the forenoon at one of the City churches. Sunday school is held every Sunday afternoon in the Reformatory. He is a very healthy boy, but is not large for his age. I found him well dressed and neat and clean in appearance. The Superintendant hopes to find a suitable home for him in the near future

residing at Gibbs Home, Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec

About 11 years of age,

May 14 1902

This boy is still at the Home. The Matron states that he is naturally a clever little fellow, and that his behaviour is satisfactory on the whole. He is inclined to be revengeful. A healthy child but small for his age. I understand that an application has been made for his
adoption.
