NotesIn 1901, Joseph Ayres, 10 (along with his sister, Annie Ayres, 9) arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 117 Barnardo children to Toronto, Ontario, and Manitoba, Canada.

Joseph was sent to the Barnardo Home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was sent to Sombra Township, Lambton County, Ontario to the home of John Edward Carpenter and his wife Amarilla (nee) Reid. John and Amarilla had a son about the same age and had just lost an infant daughter. The grandson of John and Amarilla confirmed that Joseph was treated as one of the family.

According to his memorial card, Joseph's birthdate is November 11, 1896.

On February 3, 1916, at Sombra, Ontario, Canada, Joseph Ayres, 20, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at RR1, Sombra, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in London, England; that his next of kin was his guardian (has no relatives), Mrs. John Carpenter, who resided at RR1, Bombra, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was September 11, 1894; that he was a farmer; that he was not married; and that he had served 5 months in the 34th C.E.F. He was described as 5 foot 6-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; light hair; blue eyes. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

While overseas in France, he was "gassed", and later had to have a lung removed. Two years, less a day, of the official ending of World War I, he married Alva Emma Henry who lived close to and had family connections to the Carpenter family. They were married for 53 years and had a total of 9 children, three boys, two of whom died in infancy and 6 girls leaving only the youngest child to carry on the Ayres name.

On his enlistment papers for the C.E.F. at the National Archives it says Sept 11 1894.

Joseph Ayres died on February 9, 1973.
