NotesCyril Williams, along with his brother, Leonard Mitchell (or Schlater) were brought into the North Hyde School, Lambeth, London, England, and admitted on February 5, 1891. In January, 1891, their mother, Ivy Mitchell had been sentenced to 12 months for beating and starving Cyril and Leonard and then deserting them.

Criminal Registers show an Ida Charlotte Mitchell sentenced to 12 months hard labour for 'Neglecting child under 16' on January 13 1891

Both children were discharged to Barnardo's Homes: Cyril on August 1, 1900; and Leonard on June 12, 1901.

In 1900, Cyril Williams, 11, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 101 Barnardo boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Age 15, fairly good home, employed at farm work, good health, has attended Presbytarian Church regularly in good weather, has not attended Public School yet, but will begin going next week. Character Honest and in the main truthful-can be depended upon.
Terms-Four year indenture from 1st April 1901 to 1st April 1905 at $10, $20, $30 and $40 per year, schooling and necessaries.
Having received information that this boy was badly used, I questioned him privately and closely upon this point. He assures me that his treatment is satisfactory, and that he has no desire to leave his place. Fear may account for this, as Mr Somerville, a Canadian farmer near by, informs me that a Mrs Oliver in the settlement proposed getting up a petition to the Barnardo authorities, to have the lad, who is admittedly doing a mans work, removed.
