Notes George was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Haines and George Williams. Elizabeth was married to John Thomas. They had two children Nansy (b abt 1904) and John (b abt 1906) According to the Barnardo record they separated and Elizabeth had George. John Thomas and Elizabeth reconcilled, but baby George was not allowed to remain with the family. He was eventually taken into care by Barnardo's in November of 1911. June 15, 1920 he sailed to Canada. He worked on the farm of Alex Hunter in Cheltenham, ON. He later apprenticed in New Hamburg, Ontario. He fought for Canada in WW11 and was a veteran of Juno Beach. We know from his records that he tried to keep in touch with his family, but was unable to do so. He named his first daughter Nancy after his sister. He tried when he was posted in England during the war to find them, but again was unable to make contact. He later became the Chief of Police for the village of New Hamburg, ON. He would have known he was a Home Child but he never told any of his children. Only in researching family history did his background become known. We would still like to fullfill his wish by finding the descendants of his siblings to re-connect the family.
