On May 24, 1884, at Townsend, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Joseph J. Ansell, 25, mechanic, born in England, to Thomas and Mary Ansell; and Mary A. Price, 21, born in Dunnville, Ontario, Canada, to David and Mary Price.

Joseph James and Mary Ann Price Ansell had at least one child: Hazel Ansell, born September 13, 1890, at Haldimand, Ontario, Canada.

On August 12, 1915, at North Sewell, Manitoba, Canada, Joseph James Ansell, 45, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Reading, Berkshire, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Mrs. J. J. Ansell, who resided at 447 12th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada; that his date of birth was June 5, 1870; that he was a musician; and that he had previously served in the 106th Regiment. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; grey hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

On October 20, 1916, at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Joseph James Ansell, 55, re-enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at 367 Carleton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; that he was born in Reading, Berkshire, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Mary A. Ansell, who resided at 367 Carleton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; that his date of birth was June 5, 1861; that he was a band master; and that he had previously served in the 45th Batt. for 19 months in 1915. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; grey hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

Joseph J. Ansell

Joseph James Ansell, 85, died Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Murray, 96 Niagara street. Mr. Ansell was born in Reading, England, and had been in Canada for 80 years, and in Winnipeg for the last eight years. His wife, Mary A. Ansell, predeceased him by 12 years. He went overseas as a bandmaster during the last war. The body will be taken to Dunnville, Ont., Saturday afternoon, for services and burial there. The Clarke-Leatherdale funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
