In 1904, James Berryman died in Pontypool, Wales, at the age of 36. (Jonas' mother, Hannah, married two more times: Henry Harrington in 1911; and Edward Whittington in 1929. Hannah Whittington died in 1929.)

In 1911, May Berryman, 12, arrived at Quebec, Canada, along with a group of 27 girls en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada (with 2 of the girls going to other destinations.)
