NotesMary Ellen Birchall was born to parents Robert Henry Birchall and Jane M. S. Johnston (married 1894 St Bernard's, Crosshill, Glasgow, Scotland.)

In 1901, the family was residing at 167 Caledonia Road, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Family members included: Jane Birchall, 24; Maggie Birchall, 3; Mary [Ann] Birchall, 1; Mary Ellen Birchall, 2; and Robert Birchall, 28, printer letterpress. Robert Henry Birchall died Dec. 27, 1904, from injuries sustained due to a fall which occurred the previous year. (Jane Johnson Birchall died September 14, 1926.)

In 1908, Mary Birchall, 9 (along with sisters, Maggie Birchall, 10; Ann Birchall, 8; and Sarah Birchall, 7) arrived at Quebec, Canada, with a group of 76 Scottish children from Quarriers en route to Brockville, Ontario, Canada.
