NotesMy grandmother, Violet Agnes Chapman left England on the S.S. Melita in 1919 at the age of 14. She traveled alone, landing in Quebec and going on to Toronto to work as a domestic. She listed an uncle, Wm Johnson, as her nearest relative, with his address in Brighton, England.

We don't know who her parents were, but the story she told her daughters was that she was raised by her grandfather and sent to live in an orphanage when he either died or remarried. She refused to tell them anything else.

My late aunt searched for records while she was stationed in England during WWII, but was told that the orphanage and all its' records were destroyed by the bombing. We don't know the name of the orphanage.

Given her age and situation I believe she was one of the Home Children sent to Canada. We want more than anything to know who her people were and why she was sent to Canada.

She entered the USA in Buffalo, NY in September 1923.
