NotesIn June Rose's book "For the Sake of the Children" she states that Laura was considered a rather wild, stage-struck girl of twelve when she arrive in Canada. She had come from the Girls Village Home, Barkingside. She clearly wasn't going to settle for being a domestic and showed a talent for getting into trouble. In November 1899 she got a job in Toronto as an actress with the Empire Theater Company. After that Christmas she was returned to service with Barnardo's, but had taken off shortly after. Mrs. Loveday from Hazelbra wrote Mr. Alfred Owen and suggested he remove Laura from the city. In April 1900 Laura, just fifteen had crossed the boarder into the United States. She was seen hanging around concert and singing saloons. In a letter Laura wrote to Mr. Owens, she states "I will keep truly the secret of your coming out to Buffalo or giving me the consent to do so on one condition, that is that if this gets to Dr. Barnardo's ears you will pretend to know nothing about it" Laura was returned to England by 1900.
