In 1898 James Gatehouse remarried Mary Louisa Alford.

The children were sent to the Barnardos Babies Castle. Edith and Henrietta were sent to Canada. James, an older brother, immigrated to Canada in 1902. Only a passport application lists his date of immigration. A younger brother, Herbert, stayed at the Baby Castle, grew to adulthood, married and had children.

In 1900, Mary Gatehouse, 9, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 150 Barnardo children en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. [EDITORS NOTE: Her sister, Henrietta, arrived at the same time.]

George W. and Mary Burton adopted Henrietta. She is listed on the 1901 census as their adoptive daughter. Also living with her at the time was her adoptive grandmother, Susan E Burton.
George and Mary had no children of their own.

On April 5 1903, Henrieta Gatehouse, 16, Scholar, born England, died in Welland Co, Ontario, of Heart Failure.
