In 1913, Ethel Kennedy, 12, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 14 Macpherson children en route to Stratford, Ontario, Canada.

On September 28, 1928, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Ethel Margaret Kennedy, 25, housekeeper, born in London, England, to unknown parents; and Herbert Percy Seaforth McGruther, 24, farmer, born in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, to James McGruther and Ada Spark. [EDITORS NOTE: Witnesses were Herb's younger sister Mildred Reatta and her husband Alex. Ethel believed that the Rev. G. C. Balfour who performed the marriage had also married Jim & Ada McGruther, Herb's parents.]

At least 2 children were born of this marriage: D'arcy Alexander McGruther, born June 22, 1929, at Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, died November 12, 1987, at Sarasota, Florida, United States; and William McGruther, born August 30, 1931.

Herbert McGruther enlisted on June 24, 1942, in World War II with the Queen's Own Rifles and was later transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served both in England and Continental Europe during the war. He received his honourable discharge from the Canadian Army on June 24, 1946. Medals earned during service were: 1939-45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal & C.V.S.M. & clasp.

Herbert McGruther died December 4, 1954, at Peel County, Ontario, Canada.
