NotesGilbert was placed at Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra, Western Australia. He arrived with his brother Rupert (b. 1923). Their mother Hilda had died in 1925, aged 35, in Dudley; they had two older sisters Barbara and Joan.

He served in the Australian Army 1940-46 and was a Staff Sergeant, 2/28 Btn (note year and place of birth incorrect):
