NotesRupert was placed at Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra, Western Australia. He arrived with his brother Gilbert (b. 1921). Their mother Hilda had died in 1925, aged 35, in Dudley; they had two older sisters Barbara and Joan.

He served in the Australian Army as a Private in the 2/11 Btn 1942-46:
