1911 Canadian Census records place James Parsons as a Home Boy in the housheold of Mary and Herbert Robinson in Colchester, Essex, Ontario. James is 12 years of age, born in 1897 and having immigrated from England in 1907.

Attestation papers were signed 21 Sep 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec. James Ernest Parsons was born 9 May 1896 in Tranes End, England. He was a Furnisher by trade. His Next of Kin was Miss R. M. Parsons of St Hilda Road, Glenmire Australia (No such place exists, a correction of 'Glanmire ?' was writting on the page, likely Glanmire, New South Wales, Australia). 5'7" in height with brown eyes and dark hair, he had scars on the back of his right hand and 4 vaccination marks on his left arm. His religion was listed as Church of England.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he was previously reported wounded and missing, then presumed dead at the attack at Givenchy-les-la-Bassee, Nord Pas de Calais, France. His Next of Kin is listed as Mrs. Nellie Betts of 81 Silverdale Road, Turnbridge Wells, Kent, England. His body was not recovered for burial, his name is listed on the Vimy Memorial, Vimy, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
