He was described as 5 foot 3 inches in height; florid complexion; brown eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

On September 1, 1918, at Deal Parish Church, Kent, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Ernest Patterson and Annie Elizabeth Masey, daughter of William Charles Masey and Elizabeth Ann Flisher.

Ernest and Annie Elizabeth Masey Patterson had three children: David Patterson, born 1920; died 1921 in Granby, Quebec, Canada; Keith Stuart Patterson; and Jean Elizabeth Patterson.
