Attestation papers were signed 25 Jul 1916 in Valcartier, Quebec. James William Styles was born 30 May 1898 in Oxford, England. He states his occupation as a farmer at Sweetsburg, Quebec, care of E. Algar. His Next of Kin was listed as his sister, Beatrice Styles of #9 Meredith Crescent, Rosdale, Toronto, Ontario. James had previously served with the 13th S L Dragoons. 5'4" in height with brown eyes and brown hair, he had a small marking on his right eye. His religion was listed as Church of England.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers states James was Killed in Action. He is buried in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Plot: VII. D. 6.

Newspaper article from the Toronto Star, 10 Sep 1918 states that Private J. W. Styles' sister, Miss. B. Styles had received word of her brother's death. James had been sick, and had apparently died the day before his 20th birthday (Although his attestation states his date of birth as 30 May 1898). Miss Styles was of 88 Prince Arthur Ave in Toronto. James had enlisted in Quebec in 1916 and served with the 148th Highlanders, then was transferred to the 42nd Highlanders.
