London Times of July 5, 1889

MURDER AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

A shocking crime was committed in Hankin-street, at the north end of Liverpool, yesterday morning, a labourer, named Andrew Tracey, aged 38, almost severing his wife's head from her body with a razor, and then cutting his own throat, but not dangerously. The wife is described as a drunken and violent woman, who systematically neglected her home and abused her children, and had occasionally to be kept in the insane ward of the Liverpool Workhouse. On Wednesday night the wife, who was drunk, slept on the floor of the sitting room, and it was there her throat was cut by her husband, who had himself lately taken to drink at times, though he was generally a sober and well-conducted man. He gave himself up to the police, who took him to the Northern Hospital.

The Tracey children were sent by West Derby Union
