Herbert's sister applied for and received a military headstone for Herbert. It is in Lakeside Cemetery in Port Huron.

NotesHerbert Mays Winter and his two older sisters Bertha Hilda and Ethel May were sent to Canada after the death of their mother Naomi in 1896. Their youngest sister Gladys Grace remained behind with their father. She eventually joined Bertha and Hilda in Lambton, Ontario, Canada. The children were sent to Stratford, Ontario with the Annie McPherson Homes with Mr. Merry accompanying them. Herbert's whereabouts in Ontario are unknown. He crossed the border to New York and joined the US Army at the end of the war in 1918. Some records indicate he was married and then divorced but no proof of this can be found.
