In 1910, John Speakman, 11 (along with brother, Albert Edward Speakman, 9) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with a group of 154 Middlemore children.

On November 23, 1916, John Richard Speakman, 20, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that his residence was c/o Mrs. Ziba Lockhart, who resided at Bristol, New Brunswick; that his next of kin was his father, John Richard Speakman, who resided on Chapel Street, Handsworth, England; that his date of birth was 1 November 1896; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 feet tall; fair complexion; blue eyes; light hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had a birthmark on his right hip.

On April 30, 1926, John R. Speakman, 29, entered the United States through Detroit, Michigan. He was 5 foot 2 inches in height; medium complexion; light brown hair; blue eyes. He was a labourer; unmarried; born in Staffordshire, England; he had $55 on his person. He resided in Bristol, New Brunswick, and intended on visiting his friend, Fred Rogers who resided in Big Beaver, Michigan. He intended on remaining permanently in the United States. His next of kin was his brother, Albert, who resided in New Brunswick. He had immigrated on the Mongolian in June 1910.

In 1930, John R. Speakman, 31, cement mixer, was shown residing at 117 Maple Street, Royal Oak, Oakland, Michigan. Other family members included: Helen I. Speakman, 24; and Andrey I. Speakman, 10 months. He declared he had been married 3 years and had emigrated to the US in 1928.
