"Bill Nolan, 90: Elgin - William "Bill" Nolan 90, died August 5 at the Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque after a short illness. He was born October 3, 1913 in Birkenhead, England to Frank Nolan and the former May Upton. His childhood was spent in the orphan home run by Dr. Barnardo at Birkenhead. He came to Canada in 1928 as a "home boy" working on farms in the Sweets Corners area. Mr. Nolan joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in February of 1940, one of the first 10 to join up at Kingston. He served in the merchant navy during the Second World War, becoming a chief petty officer. He traveled all over the world including the South Pacific and made seven trips across the Artic bringing supplies to London. He was discharged in 1946. He married Eleanor Langlois in Halifax, NS in 1945. After her death he married his second wife Phyllis Sloan-Chapman in Sweets Corners in 1973. After DuPont Canada established its plant at Maitland, he worked there as a gardener retiring at age 65. He identified with the Anglican Church, attending ST. John's Leeds, in Sweets Corners, and over the years lived in Elgin, Seeleys Bay and then back in Sweets Corners. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 491 in Seeleys Bay, where he served in many posts including youth and education officer. He was also the first to receive life membership in the Naval Vererans Association (Kingston). He is survived by one daughter Maureen Nolan of Elgin, broth Raymond Nolan of Huntsville, numerous nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law Joe Langlois and wife Glenna of Elgin and Hurbert Langlois of Verdun, Quebec and sister in law Theresa Alleyn of Montreal Quebec. He was predeceased by both his wives, daughter Debbie Nolan and brother David Nolan. Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home Elgin, where special services were held by the Seeleys Bay Legion branch and the Kingston Naval Veterans Association. The funeral was held August 9 in St. John's Anglican Church Leeds at Sweets Corners with Rev Reg Gilbert officiating. Burial followed at Lillies Baptist Cemetery. The active pallbearers were John Cross, Vince Kenney, Pat Kenney, Ed Courneya, John Duncan and Fred Day. Honorary pallbearers were Don Charboneau, Jack Inglis, Joe Turner, Russ Thompson, Ben Hallladay, Mike Willis, Orvin Martin, Joe Langlois, Edmund Kenney and Norm Merriman.
