NotesReginald was the son of Alfred and Mary Turner who married at the Holy Trinity Church in Islington on 25 December 1885. He was the 5th of six children currently known born to Alfred and 7 children to Mary.

By 1901, Mary Turner was living with relatives in Camberwell. In 1902, Barnados officials would be called to the home by Mary's landlord. Alfred was a punch and judy showman whose work was well known in the royalty circles but unfortunately became an alcoholic who had abandoned the family, was arrested for the offense the first time and put in jail for 1 month, than abandoned again as soon as he was released. Mary was found to be a drunk and found to have had "men in her bedroom under suspicious circumstances". She was 7 weeks behind on rent and was in danger of being evicted.

Reginald and his younger sister Louise were taken from the mother by Barnardos homes. Louise would remain in the homes until she turned 14 in which she would be transferred to Whitechapel school. Reginald was sent to Ontario in 1904 on the Southwark arriving in Halifax on 3 April 1904.
