NotesA birth registration was found for Frances Amelia Thorne: Year of Registration: 1889; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: Shoreditch; County: London, Middlesex; Volume: 1c; Page: 81. Parents: Francis William Thorne and Phoebe Capp, married 1874, Bethnal Green, London, England.

Minnie's mother was an abusive alcoholic, and her habits caused them to be homeless. Their father, from stress, had a "fit", fell, and broke some ribs, which caused him to be in the hospital for a time. Two of Minnie's sisters, Alice and Annie, were sent and admitted to Barnardos at that time.

Four siblings of Minnie were also admitted and sent to Canada. One older sister, Phoebe, already lived away from them, and a younger sister, Matilda, went to live with an aunt.

In 1902, Minnie Thorne, 13, arrived at Portland, Maine, USA, in a group of 125 Barnardo girls en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

On March 15, 1911, at Millbrook, Durham, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Minnie Thorne, 20, maid, born to William and Phoebe Thorne; and another home child, Henry Ernest Bennewith, 22, farmer, born to Henry Bennewith and Elizabeth Platt. Albert and Alice (Thorney) Hawkins were witnesses to the marriage.

On January 16, 1916, at Millbrook, Ontario, Canada, Henry Ernest Bennewith enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided in Millbrook, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Bethnal Green, London, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Mary Louise Bennewith, who resided in Millbrook, Ontario; that his date of birth was December 12, 1889; and that he was a farmer. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; black hair. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Henry Ernest Bennewith was killed in action on April 23, 1918, at Souchez, France. He is buried at the Sucrerie Cemetery at Ablain, St. Nazsire, 1/2 mile West of Souchez, France.

On April 20, 1921, at Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Minnie Bennewith, 27, widow, born in England to William and Phoebe Jones; and Arthur Barrett, 20, farm laborer, born in Lancashire, England, to Mary Ellen Barrett (father unknown).

Arthur and Minnie Thorne Barrett had at least two children.
