A 1901 Scottish Census for John Yorston places him in Cranston Parish, Midlothian, Scotland with his Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle William Yorston. He was born in Pencaitland, Haddington, Scotland.

A 1911 Canadian Census places John in the household of Sarah Ellen and William J Gordon, in Torbolton, Carleton, Ontario, Canada. He's listed as Domestic help who immigrated from Scotland in 1910.

Attestation paper for World War I was signed 20 Oct 1916 in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 1 Dec 1895. His Next of Kin was friend, Paul Dolan of Woodlawn, Ontario. John was a Farmer by trade. He was 5'3" with fair freckled skin, blue eyes and red hair, he had a small mole beneath his left ear, a small mole on the right side of his neck. His religion is listed as Presbyterian.

A second Attestation paper was found signed 7 Mar 1916 in Shawville, Quebec. Paul Dolan was his friend and Next of Kin in Woodlawn Ontario, biggest conflict of information was that this first form listed his year of birth in 1894 (Same date).

According to his Canadian Commonwealth Grave Register he was a Prisoner of War at Limburg, Belgium. He's buried at Mons Communal Cemetery, Monds, Hainaut, Belgium.
