Dear Mr Gregory:

This is in reply to your letter of September 2 1982 in which you request information regarding your grandfather, Sidney GREGORY.

A check of our records indicates that one "Sidney Kinnaird GREGORY" joined the Royal North West Mounted Police on November 30 1907 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. All of his service was in Saskatchewan and Yukon Territory. He served until August 31 1910 at which time he purchased his discharge.
Sidney Kinnaird GREGORY's application for the Force indicated that at the time he applied, that is November 1907, he was 25 years of age. He claimed to have been previously employed as an undertaker and farmer. His height was given as 5 feet and
10 inches and his weight 165 pounds. His place of birth was shown as England and his next of kin Mrs E M Gregory, 61 Preston Road, Brighton, Sussex, England.
We could not locate any record on a member of the Force named Nelson GREGORY for the period in question.

His application form stated that he understood the care and management of horses but had never ridden. Had he at any time served in any Military or Police Force:
If so, when and why was he discharged? Yes, his time was up, A.M.C. (Vol)
His chest measurement was given as 35 inches (the minimum permissible). He was single.
He would have earned around 60c per day but agreed to repay his rail fare from Winnipeg to Regina (viz $7.14) by two stoppages of $3.57 per month from his pay.

He served as a constable and his conduct during service was described as Fair at the time he purchased his discharge.

The Officer CommandingDawson Y.T. Feb 14 1910
"B" Division
R.N.W.M.Police
Dawson, Y.T.

Sir,
I have the honor to request that I may be permitted to purchase my discharge from the Police Force about the end of September of this year owing to a recent trouble in the family. I consider it necessary for me to return to England to live. I therefore request that I be allowed to leave before navigation closes this coming season.
I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant,
S.K. Gregory Const.
