Thomas Whitbread died January 31, 1895, at 57 years of age. He was then residing at 7 Hencroft Street Slough, England. He had been a private in the Grenadier Guards and acted as a soldier valet to Prince Edward of Sax-Weimar.
Soon afterwards, Frances Whitbread developed breast cancer and died. No help was available for her children and they were placed with Barnardo Homes.
Ernest Whitbread, 10, arrived in Quebec, Canada, with a group of 207 children en route to Ontario, Canada. Two of Ernest's brothers George (born 1890, sailed to Canada in 1901), and Samuel (born 1888, sailed on the same ship, Tunisian, as George), came to Canada with Barnardo Homes. His other siblings, Thomas William, born 1876; Anthony Walter Edwin, born 1878; Isaac, born 1881; Henry 1883; and his sister, Rose, also may have immigrated.
