NotesIn 1891, Samuel Whitbread, 3 years of age, was residing at 3 Lime Grove, Clewer, Berkshire, England. Other family members included: Anthony Whitbread, 12; George Whitbread, 7 months; mother Frances Whitbread, 39, charwoman; Harry Whitbread, 7; Isaac Whitbread, 10; Ernest Whitbread, 5; father Thomas Whitbread, 46, engineers labourer (debility is noted--weak or feeble; an infirmity); Thomas Whitbread, 18, footman.

Thomas Whitbread died January 31, 1895, at 57 years of age. He was then residing at 7 Hencroft Street Slough, England. He had been a private in the Grenadier Guards and acted as a soldier valet to Prince Edward of Sax-Weimar.

Soon afterwards, Frances Whitbread developed breast cancer and died. No help was available for her children and they were placed with Barnardo Homes.

Samuel Whitbread, 13, along with his brother, George Whitfield, arrived in Portland, Maine, with a group of 260 Dr. Barnardo children from London, England, to Toronto, Ontario (193), Peterborough, Ontario (6) and to Russell, Manitoba (60). Two of Samuel's brothers George (born 1890, sailed on the same ship, Tunisian, as Samuel), and Ernest (born 1886), came to Canada with Barnardo Homes. His other siblings, Thomas William, born 1876; Anthony Walter Edwin, born 1878; Isaac, born 1881; Henry 1883; and his sister, Rose, also may have immigrated.

In 1911, Samuel Whitbred, 23, was shown as a hired man / farm laborer for Loftus Shier and family in Brock Township, Valentine Village, Ontario, Canada. His birth date was shown as July 1888 and his immigration year as 1905.

On March 6, 1912, Samuel R. C. Whitbread, 23, married Lavinia Alice Crandon, 19, daughter of Thomas Crandon. Samuel stated he was born in Windsor, England; that he resided in Valentyne, Ontario, Canada; and that his parents names were Thomas Whitbread and Frances Grove. His brother George Whitbread witnessed the marriage.
